MISSION

MGP Agro & Medicare is an agriculture and healthcare organisation. It aims at providing an enriched technical and moral support to the farming community thereby enabling them to attain exposure over the most effective, cost effecient and organic farming practices to achieve finest quality in cultivation.

MGP Agro & Medicare Pvt Ltd was founded by Mr G.Palanivel in 1996 as an initative to begin the cultivation of herbal plants of high medicinal value in Tamil Nadu. It started with 5 acres of coleus forskohlii in salem district of Tamil Nadu and later diversified with various medicinal crops from coleus, turmeric etc.. over the South Indian states grazing over peak cultivation of 10,000 acres/ year

The company now has the trust of more than 10,000 farmers over the southern states of India and is providing various technical supports in cultivation, sourcing of organic and semi-organic manures and federation benefits to them in the form of "MGP AGROMED CENTRES" distributed throughout the southern states of the country.

India has been the land of Siddars right from the period of God Dhanvantri. India has been a pioneer in natural medicines and it has been the base for important systems of medicine such as ayurveda, siddha and unani were invoked. Inspite of these last three to four decades India has not been concentrating on the green gold of phytochemicals since commercial agriculture paved a way for green revolution. Despite this there has always been sporadic offers and innovation in natural medicinal system and its application

Among various Research and Development one such important innovation is the identification of forskolin the alkaloid from coleus forskohlii, a powerful medicinal plant for obesity and cardio vascular problems

Though the potential of coleus is high and with very vast scope, the application of mind for the cultivation at farmers level was very much low and so it was a challenge for us to introduce, popularize & familiarise its cultivation, procurement, post harvest processing, supply and price.

We took up the challenge almost over a decade mainly in 1996 at 5 acre with 5 farmers in salem district in the method of contract farming. Today we have been able to reachout more than 10,000 farmers in 20 districts of Tamilnadu, 2 districts of Andra Pradesh and 3 districts of Karnataka bringing in more than 45,000 acres in contract cultivation of coleus.

The economic impact developed among farmers are as follows

i) Today there are more than 10,000 farmers regularly cultivate coleus with standardized cultivation practices.

ii) Suitable harvest, procurement, processing techniques are fixed

iii) Huge demand in the international market was created and the honest supply chain linkage has attracted a large number of exporters towards coleus farmers.

iv) Commercial bank supports and JLG tieups, United India insurance coverage ad government subsidies have come to play a major role in these ventures.

MGP has gained its strength by overcoming the challenges year by year through its concept of "vision, innovation & hardwork" and transparent dealings.

MGP Agro & Medicare Pvt Ltd bonds with farmers in the form of contract farming, corporate farming and co-operative farming.The company also provides various crop safe-guarding options in the form of insurance and it aslo provides financial supports/loans to farmers with the help of local banks. It has also created a handfull of farmer federations in various regions to obtain supports from the government.

The company takes intense care in choosing the suitable perfect field for the required crop, prepares the seedings and plans the irrigation and other supports that should be provided to the crop. Well trained agri graduates inspect the field in regular intervals to ensure the healthy growth of the crop. It also makes the buy-back arrangements and price determinations in a mutually beneficial standards.
